NJ Permit To Carry

Course Details:

This 3-4 hour class is required to apply for the NJ Permit to Carry (PTC). Upon completion of the class, you will be scheduled for the qualification portion at a later date, time, & location. After completion of the class and passing the qualification course, you will then be given the SP-182 forms to fill out and submit for your NJ PTC application. The class will go over Firearm Safety and Storage, Basic Pistol and Shooting Fundamentals, Malfunctions, NJ Laws, etc.

The qualification course includes drawing from a holster and shooting 10 rounds at 3, 5, 7, 10, and 15 yards. You must hit at least 40 out of 50 shots (80%). You will also be required to demonstrate safety and proficiency in drawing from a holster, loading your magazine(s), and reloading your firearm during the qualification.

What To Bring:

• Pistol (You wish to qualify with):

  • No Dots or Magnification Sights (iron sights only)

  • No Lights or Lasers

• Holster:

  • Strong side hip holster - Inside Waist Band (IWB)/Outside Waist Band (OWB) are both allowed (NO cross-draw, shoulder, appendix, or rear holsters draws)

• Equipment and Ammunition:

  • At least 2 magazines

  • 100 rounds of factory loaded ammunition (ammunition may be bought at the range)

  • Eyes (safety glasses) and Ears (electronic ears preferred but not required; rental of Eyes and Ears are available at the range)

• Attire:

  • Shirts: Full-length shirt with a high neckline - T-shirt, long sleeve shirt, sweater

  • Pants: Comfortable, full coverage pants with no holes - Jeans, cargo pants, (shorts are acceptable but not recommended)

  • NO open-toed shoes, crocs, or heels

  • NO tank tops, sleeveless, low-cut, see-through or cropped shirts

• IDs:

  • Driver's/State License - CANNOT be expired

  • NJ Firearms ID (FID) - CANNOT be expired (FID is not required for out-of-state residents)

  • Address and Name MUST match both IDs
